If someone would make things look nice, I think they would be more likely to stay nice.

just an idea.
and xntrik, i don't care to be mod, but i was just listing people who are on quite frequently.

What I have especially observed is that whenever someone posts something that's clearly aimed at pissing people off, or just being as intentially negative as possible, there are about 5 more posts aimed right back that are just as bad, and pretty soon what should have been a decent thread is totally out of control. See: the El-P thread.
I'm checking my PM list and I don't see any reports from you or anyone else about the EL-P thread. No matter how many mods we have, it isn't feasible for us to read and patrol every thread in every forum, especially when said threads are multiple pages in length and have no outwardly "spammish" title or subject matter to begin with. If you only knew how much real spam gets closed and deleted in the TMV forum every week. If you can give examples of areas and threads where you feel more moderation is needed, then you should be able to report these problems as they occur. I still feel that neither one of you have really given a solid answer yet for why you're not able to report these issues if they bother you enough to request new mods.
yeah, a big part of it is in the TMV section. there have been retarded threads that don't belong there, but they stay open for days and days of just spam.
just an idea.

it's there to be used whenever a post is inappropriate, this includes spamming. now having been informed about the el-p thread i cleaned up the thread, as cybrid said, this forum as an entity is extremely large and if people don't say there is a problem we won't always know one exists. rules on the drunkship have laxed extremely over the past 6 months - 1 year, people get away with a lot more than they used to, but this is drunkship only, it isn't allowed for the other forums, and if you find something that bothers you before someone has a chance to get to it (we've got people in all time zones, cassie & scottie in australia, nardo & diana & i in europe, jef & agrajag & limits & dennis in the usa) so our user times are extremely staggered. i am happy to respond to any reports that i get, don't worry about wasting my time, i don't have a job at the moment so i'm here to help!
i have no problem reporting them, but from past problems, i've been told that the report button isn't to be used lightly. to use good judgement whether its a big deal or not. basically, only use it for porn or illegal downloading.

if that's what you're looking for in a mod then seriously shorty427 should be a mod, he is an ace with the search function, generally well liked, respectable post count, been around a while, pretty sure he frequents almost all the different sub forums, etc. I agree with matilda, I think the mods we have now are great, but one more couldn't hurt things around here.
If you want to help then report those topics so they can be taken care of. It's not really about "dumb" topics in 'Drunkship', personally I just have a problem with repetitive topics. Most things are fun once, but not all of them are fun again and again.

it is like if nobody reported any crimes to the local police station and then a month down the road complained that the sherrif wasn't doing enough to crack down on crime

See now you're just blatantly plagiarizing my metaphors.
My question also is how often do you guys really report spam or other bad behavior? Because I have done that more recently and have been very satisfied with the responses.
To me, it's like people are complaining that their house got broken into and no cop was there to see it. Well, maybe you should consider telling a cop about it later. Because they'll investigate it but you can't really expect them to be watching 24 hours a day and only deal with the things they physically see.
There is a record of everything that happens on this board. If you take the time to tell someone about it, they can do something.
My point is, those of us who are here a lot can help clean up the board by reporting more stuff ourselves. We don't have to have a little mod title to make things better.

and to be honest, going through my pm box, i only have 2 PMs, from bard regarding 1 thread he had a problem with, and teh second pm was only because someone did not close it the very minute he reported it.
i have not personally seen him complain in or about any of the random threads or threads that he all of a sudden feels are a problem now, and i would imagine, and could probably check that he's probably contributed to such threads.
while i don't doubt your sincerity, i don't think this sudden about face or enlightenment is anything that needs to be dealt with, because these problems are just a part of an online community.
like CLA said, we can only deal with what we personally see. i knoe i contribute spam myself, but that's because i also come here to enjoy myself, not look after the rest of you. and i do not think anything i do in that manner is any worse that what other members do on a daily basis.
i respond to almost every PM i get and Reported Post PM, and almost everytime by the time i respond teh situation is already taken care of.
having another mod is not going to solve anything that can't be helped by members taking responsibility for their community forum.
i would even say other members think we are TOO active, with all the threads labeled 'mods gtfo' everyday i vist here, which i have never seen in all my 3 years being here until this year/late '06.
time and time again, my position, at least teh one i operate on, is that the mods are not here to take care of the members, they are here to take care of the board itself. that means taking actions that benefit the board, not eac member's priorities. after all, i do not close every thread i am asked to or reprimand every member i am asked, if i do not feel it's necessary.
