Seriously. The only Divison song I've heard that I've really liked is "Disorder." That's the only song that I really feel like all their positive elements really come together well. For the most part it's just... too obviously retro for me. Usually I don't have this problem--I listen to The Clash religiously, and some of that other old punk shit--but it's extremely noticeable here. It seems like there is absolutely no excitement in the majority of their songs. But then I guess that's what they were about, right? I don't know.

I own Closer and Unknown Pleasures, if you can believe that. I do like the bass lines and the drumming.

Well, I like some of the songs, but I don't like the vocalist.

that's a shame, i like joy division alot. i'm not obsessed, though.

i like curtis' lyrics and they kind of jumpstarted the whole new wave thing too, so i mean they didn't necessarily 'suck' but i also see what you mean about the aging.

Retro?!!?!?? I'm not sure you know what you are saying. You mean they sound just like bands from the 60s, 50s, 40s or something???!?! I'm assuming what you mean is that there are many bands around these days who are influenced by joy Division and thus sound somewhat like them.

Also, Joy Division's sound was intentionally detached sounding, because if they weren't then the would have sounded ridiculously overwrought and earnest because there is such emotional weight behind the lyrics. But there are songs where they get very exciteable and visceral like, Digital, or your favourite, Disorder.

Even the albums? They were produced to sound that way. To sound sparse, dark and vacumous (sp?).

If "Closer" and "Unknown Pleasures" bores you listen to this:

I enjoy the latter two albums, but this is my favorite. It's got a perfect mix of upbeat punk and their slower more moody songs, and even if you don't enjoy their two proper albums their's still a good chance you'll like this because it's quite different.

martin hannett produced those albums and he's looked upon as a 'genius' (as far as that goes)... so i'd just say it's not your thing and what not.

Martin Hannett actually ripped off the Pere Ubu song "codex" for every single song he ever produced.

i don't think they suck, but i definitely think the time during which i enjoyed them has already passed.

now, there's no mood in which to listen to them.

a lot of the songs blend together anymore.

it took me awhile to really get into them, but right now they're my current obsession. also i read somewhere that alot of the recordings on the subtance cd, were supposed to be the debut joy division album. but the members weren't happy with the way the songs sounded, so they went in to record unknown pleasures.

ian curtis was supposed to be heavily influenced by pere ubu too.

I like them. There are sometimes when Ians voice is so out of tune I seriously get bad chills down my spine. Like it's so bad I get fysically affected by it.

But when he doesn't they're great.

The majority of the kids who express a love for Joy Division these days, do so because Thursday name dropped them.

i dont own any Joy Division albums, but do really liek them.

I once listened to "Atmosphere" on a really quiet night when i was outside, only other sounds were the sea. Was somewhat good experience.

They're a mood band and I can see why their influence is highly-prized, although I think it's responsible for more shitty bands than good ones.
