I personally like both of those and I don't really care for their newer stuff. Like Dande said, older is harder sounding.

The older albums feel less cohesive or focused but they also have some of their crazier guitar work

Crack the skye is the best compromised.

I'm not a big fan of mastodon, I don't really like metal nor the kind of pop rock stuff they put out more recently, but I believe crack the skye is one of my favorite album of those past ten years (in a list that would include a hundred albums but still !)

Is the music industry trying to make them big or something? Or at least their label is. They've been releasing their weakest stuff lately but they are getting relatively popular.

They been relatively popular for years and have been with the same label for awhile. Overall I think the new record and ep are better than the last 2 records

Yeah but I've seen their popularity kind of skyrocket lately but maybe I'm wrong. I agree about their last record, but I don't feel it's at the level of anything they did previous to "Once More...".

Yes but I don't follow those bands too much so I don't have much of a pespective about their popularity as I have about Mastodon's. And Mastodon is probably the most awkward of them, maybe not their latest stuff though.

"Mastodon is no stranger to addressing loss in their music. The band's 2009 album Crack the Skye is dedicated to drummer and vocalist Brann Dailor's sister Skye Dailor, The Hunter was dedicated to guitarist and vocalist Brent Hinds' brother, and Emperor of Sand addressed the loss of band family members due to cancer over the years. The new Mastodon album will do the same."

«“We have been working on a brand new record since October really. So we’re getting ready to record that soon, but it won’t be out until next year some time. You’ve got to stay sort of active and keep putting out music. Times are changing. I don’t know if we’re going to be able to tour next year, so is it worth it putting a record out, does it make sense?

“I always want to put music out, but is it one of those things where you put a record out, it goes straight to Spotify and because there’s no money being made off of it, you can’t survive? If you can’t tour and go out and sell merchandise, those things go hand in hand. It’s like a free giveaway, really.”»
