I like some death metal stuff anyway, so the voice doesn't bother me so much. I would have recommended a different album as a starting point though. Either Blackwater Park or Deliverence would make a good starting point for the heavier stuff and if you don't want any heavy stuff at all, there's always Damnation which is a fine album in it's own right.

I was "ehhhh" on Opeth. Their mellow stuff was rad though.

So... I went with two of my friends to see them on Halloween in Philly.

Holy mother fucking shit. They blew me away.

I am now a relatively big Opeth fan.

See them. Even if you don't like them. I guarantee you'll be chanting for an encore.

They're pretty good. Mike's voice is one of the best death vocals around. And their stuff, for what it is, is pretty creative.

I have a friend who LOVES Opeth.

I like them, I like that the vocalist has such great range (the growls and the clean singing) and the music is absolutely stunning, from what i've heard.
I prefer the lighter stuff though.

I need to get some more Opeth.

I wasn't a big fan of the growling until I saw them perform live.

It completely blew me away at how he could go from a melodic, beautiful voice to this low growl with NO EFFORT WHATSOEVER. He didn't exagerrate to act all hardcore. He just growled like it was nothing. I was in awe.

And for the record, they're freakin hilarious. Their banter in between songs was cracking up everyone.

The performances by all members of teh band on the Lamentations DVD totally blow me away. I honestly didn't think he would sing that well live... and the drums, oh the drums!

A friend just gave me a cd, and I enjoyed it(Ghost Reveries?) I wasn't a big fan of his growl, mostly because I think the singing is beautiful and woudl love to just hear that. I'm a fan of hardcore so I have no problem with a growl.

They're becoming one of my favourite bands now. There's only a few bands that've really hit me hard with how good they are since i first heard deloused, and they're one of them. If you don't know them check them out, they're like the mars volta but playing metal - that is to say, listen to them anyway even if you don't like growly vocals or metal, they're great and they'll probably appeal to you if you like tmv.

I love the new album and blackwater park. don't have any others yet though. Any suggestions as to which one i should get next?

Still Life (more proggy)
My Arms, Your Hearse (more raw sounding and death metal)
Damnation (accoustic)
Deliverance (well hmm I just like it because... I don't know why actually)
Morningrise (more folkish)
Orchid (more folkish)

tried to get into them so I bought morningrise and I really hated it. It all seemed too disjointed...

I also bought My arms, your hearse and I liked it better. The first 4 tracks or so are awesome and then it gets boring.

never judge an album by its cover.

e.g. scab dates. surprising how tmv rely on storm thorguson so much for good cover art

but anyway, buy blackwater park, or the ghost reveries. awesome stuff.
