I initially made several posts about her in the My Brightest Diamond thread (both being artists with similar sound tipped to me by the Gorilla Vs Bear music blog). But now that MBD's album has finally come out (well leaked, anyway), I figured leave that thread to MBD and give St. Vincent one of her own...

St. Vincent is the band of singer-guitarist-composer, Annie Clark. Hailed by the Boston Globe as an, 'adorably spunky guitar prodigy,' 23 year-old Annie has been building a buzz opening for such acclaimed and diverse acts as Television, Tracy + the Plastics, Tuck & Patti, and Xiu Xiu. An inventive and versatile guitarist, Annie has played with avant-garde composer, Glenn Branca, and is a member of symphonic pop spectacle, The Polyphonic Spree.

In other saintly news, Clark is putting finishing touches on her upcoming debut, which features guest work by other members of the Polyphonic Spree as well as David Bowie's band. There is no word on which label will release the album or an exact track list, but Clark told Urban Pollution that the record would definitely include, but not be limited to the following songs, listed in no particular order:

Marry Me
Paris Is Burning
Your Lips Are Red
Now, Now
Jesus Saves, I Spend
All My Stars Aligned
Human Racing
What Me Worry
Landmines
The Funeral Song

Some of the above songs are already streaming at her Myspace site. I highly recommend the song "Paris Is Burning"

RIYL: Jeff Buckley, Bjork, PJ Harvey, Nina Simone etc....

NOTE: It's probably inconsequential to most, but as a guitarist, I think it's fucking awesome that her uncle is none other than famed virtuoso fingerstyle jazz guitarist Tuck Andress of the married jazz/pop duo Tuck & Patti. According to Annie, "They are the kind of people when I was 14 sat me down and put candles on and put on Coltrane's Love Supreme and The Blues and The Abstract Truth and all of these records that, when you're 14 and haven't been exposed to this, it would absolutely blow your mind. So they were pivotal in the exposure to the realm of jazz but other things as well." It's neat thinking that some of Andress' virtuosity might have rubbed off on his niece as well. You can view some youtube videos of the man in action here, here and here.

Sometimes I wish MySpace wasn't that sucky.
The songs won't load. Nothing would load on MySpace for me today.
And you're not on Slsk.
:(

But her uncle's vids on Youtube were exquisite.

I only have two songs shared (one is good quality, the other is a myspace rip), but I'm online right now if you want them.

Well, I'm leaving for work in a few minutes, but that should be enough.

Thanks!

Brilliant debut album. Love it. I also love that even though she's a virtuoso, she seems more interested in writing great songs than showing off her advanced chops. Every moment feels perfectly complimented by her guitar playing. She's definitely more concerned with good songwriting than anything else, and I really admire that.

I'm super pissed that I missed her performance here a few weeks ago.

In the past few days this album has completely dwarfed everything else I've heard this year. It's just such a lovely album, and she's so damn good. Her voice kills me, and her guitar playing is so tasteful, I love it. Who knows if it'll be my album of the year, 5 months from now, but it's gotta be the debut album of the year. Best new artist, or something

Big props to Cybrid for discovering her over a year ago. If I ever start a record label I'm gonna be looking for you to be the talent scout, my friend.

Haha. Well it only seems prescient because it took forever (in internet time) for her to find a label to release her album after being "discovered" by Gorilla Vs Bear and the like. Cute indie singer/songwriter/virtuoso guitarist doesn't stay under the radar for too long...

They've been playing her all over this Boston indie rock station I listen to on my way to work for the last few weeks. I don't know the name of the song, but it's pretty great.

I put this on earlier and wasn't really in the mood, but I could tell it sounded promising. I'll give it another go later. I am feeling those Kate Bush comparisons though.

a lot of the stuff she does sounds like if Annie Haslam were singing with early King Crimson.
