Sparta are a great band, I'd have to say perhaps my 3rd favourite, behind TMV and ...Trail of Dead. Live, they are pretty good, but seeing as I haven't seen TMV live I can't really say.

What makes people like some music and no others? We all obviously like TMV but alot of us think that Sparta is like eating Baking Soda.

Thoughts?

I find Sparta's music rather catchy. On the other hand, catchy tunes = short lifespan (in most cases). But I do think they stand their ground, especially on the stage. I have no problem with them.

I think it just boils down to personal preference. *shrug*

Maybe because most of us here have picked TMV as their favourite, and Sparta is very much different.

I got into Sparta before TMV, so it was like a bonus to hear TMV.

I saw Sparta at Glastonbury recently and thought they were pretty good. Their songs are definitely catchy and they play better than most rock bands out there.

The only problem was when Jim gave a speech before Cut Your Ribbon about George Bush being an asshole. When he first said it it was cool, people clapped and all that. Then he did the unforgivable. He changed the lyrics in the break from the 'Do you suspect these motives' to 'George Bush you are a bastard' or something like that. I couldn't hear properly cause I was cringing too much.

wow thats lame >_>

and, I dig sparta, I have wiretap scars, its nothing extraordinary, but its got some listenable tunes.

one of the best poprock type band things out there.

they're pretty popular at my school, because half my school is weezer-emo kids and went to the weezer show last summer, and sparta was opening.

and so i wear my atdi shirt and stare them down.

and then i did it with my TMV shirt.

and they said 'who the hell is At The Drive-In?'

nah, i added that last part =]

a unique sound.

sparta sounds too much like a bland rehash of atdi to me.

the mars volta has some atdi influence clearly, but they add enough outside influences to make it fresh. i don't care if a band's sound is amalgamated, as long as they have a sound all their own in the end.

I think it was the lack of TMV at the begginning that led me to liking Sparta, and I fully support them. I'll probably buy everything they put out, until they screw up.

Sparta aren't very special. The music they make is pretty normal. Some of it is great but the rest is really dull. They're very talented and they have the potential to do a hell of a lot better.

I really havent listened to many of their songs, but from what I have heard, I dont think theyre that great. Like its catchy and all, but after i hear it like twice, I just never want to hear it again. But in comparison to ATDI or the mars volta, there are only a couple bands that dont suck. :turtle:

i partly agree here. first of all, some of sparta's stuff is just inconsistent: some of it's brill, but most stuff isn't. secondly though, i just don't believe those guys are capable of making music that is as revolutionary as tmv's, because the afro's (this is not meant in a negative way at all, but meant to be less typing - which isn't the case now :S) were always the ones in atdi who wanted to try something different. i fear sparta's music will remain the same in the future, leaving them trailing far behind tmv. it's harsh, but my opinion just is.

Sparta, I would say is pretty mediocre. They are nothing compared to TMV. TMV is a band of very brilliant musicians. Even if you didn't compare them to TMV i'd say that they are simply just another band that has a few catchy tunes.
