There's a few I could come up with that I would definitely consider as being among the best of the last 5 years:

Broken Social Scene - you forgot it in people
The Wrens - Meadowlands
The Shins - chutes too narrow
Sigur Ros - ageatis byrjun, ( )
At The Drive In - relationship of command
Modest Mouse - the moon and antarctica
Ween - white pepper, quebec
Shellac - 1000 Hurts
Fugazi - the argument
Blood Brothers - burn piano island burn
Dismemberment Plan - change
Tom Waits - alice, blood money, real gone
Hot Snakes - suicide invoice
Isis - oceanic, panopticon
Enon - high society
Melt Banana - cell scape
Sonic Youth - murray street, sonic nurse
And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead - madonna, source tags and codes
The Books - thought for food, the lemon of pink

out of those I'd go for Broken Social Scene, Blood Brothers, Sigur Ros, Shellac or The Wrens... but I'm sure I'm missing something.

I bet your ideas will trigger something.

Lets work out what is the best record of the first half of this decade.

Not even because of my fandom, I think I'd take Deloused too.

Personally, I can see a lot of people choosing Agaetis but I would select ( ). Broken Social Scene record I would choose for now, but I can see history not being too kind to their sound, although they are amazing. While I love Sonic Youth, I don't think either album is a bona fide classic but Tom Waits' Blood Money is certainly in. Relationship of Command is well-deserved, as well.

Plus, there's a lot of rap - but that's always hard to gauge. I personally would take King Gheedorah's Take Me to Your Leader or even Madvillainy, though it's very early to tell.

EDIT: There's always the so-called noise-rock bands - I can see Black Dice's Beaches and Canyons being a "lost" underground classic or some bullshit like that. Additionally, I think Squarepusher's Ultravisitor is one of the most conceptually and musically sound albums I've ever had the pleasure of listening to.

As much as I like The Shins, I don't think they even deserve to be considered. They're good but not that special...

Amen to that!

Brian Wilson - Smile

Has anybody listened to it? It's an amazing album, with an amazing story behind it...

Hmm...

I'd put Deloused on too. Anything that qualifies from Dillinger Escape Plan, too. Muse's Origin Of Symmetry, Source Tags and Codes by Trail Of Dead, Squarepusher's Ultravisitor, Druqs, the Sikth album, Kid A...

...but I would automatically disqualify all of these bands that seemed to have just decided filling an entire record with delayed guitars flitting around aimlessly would be the next level. I mean, yeah, I like Explosions In The Sky, Sigur Rós and co., but there's a limit... maybe it can be "Lazy Trend Of The Last 5 Years" or something...
