I just listened to the Smile Sessions for the first time a few days ago, which was intended to be the follow-up to Pet Sounds, and while it was pretty crazy and full of arrangements, it blew me away... I never knew their later half of their career would be so psychedelic and off-the-deep-end but I guess I should’ve listened more to my father who always spoke super highly of them when I was growing up.

Ultimately I might consider Pet Sounds as the all time album because it has more focus. But this Smile Sessions, which is as close to their originally intentioned album if it were to release is no doubt their magnum opus... if Smile properly released in an alternate timeline they would have legit dethroned the Beatles as psychedelic masters... but if it were to properly release we would have never gotten Smiley Smile as an album either...

Listening to the Smiley Smile album, the post-mental-breakdown of Brian and the stripped down versions of songs is fucking weird and delightful though. Apparently they abandoned all the Smile sessions and decompressed in Brian's new home studio by getting high on hash all day every day and creating songs that had them laughing their asses off. I also find it interesting that drug rehab centers picked it to play to patients when coming down from bad trips... now I’m just going down a rabbit hole of later era Beach Boys albums and think they’re my new (old) favorite band.

One of the reasons I always really dug the Volta fandom is that it pulls people from a lot of different other scenes and tastes.  These lists demonstrate just how varied our interests are.

Yeah, I’ll be honest. I haven’t heard of half of the albums listed in this thread. Conversely, if you read my list, you would think I live in a narrow music universe, because while I listen to a wide variety of bands and genres, I find that my all-time favorite albums come from a small circle of my favorite bands.
