Kendrick's new album is disappointing. Definitely has some good tracks but a lot of duds. he actually sounds like drake on quite a few songs which is awful. and the song with Rhianna is lame af

To pimp was aoty imo. but damn is p weak.

new billy woods album Known Unknowns is really good. one of my favourite rappers

i dont know if ive posted about him in this thread before but definitely check out his albums History Will Absolve Me and Today, I Wrote Nothing. great dark humour, great political raps as well. TIWN is a really interesting approach to a rap album as well

808 & Heartbreak is a way better album than I initially judged. Glad I revisited it !

Hear, hear. Kanye, Pusha et al are doing the devil's work as far as I am concerned. Stirring up press for your album by plastering the image of one of the world's biggest stars in blackface in the minds of the general public to cover up the fact that music on your album is tepid is the height of rap cynicism.

Weird how this thread fell by the wayside.

Anyway, I haven't been hyped on a new hip-hop project for awhile. Maybe I'm just getting old. HOWEVER,

this has woken my dormant love from its slumber.

It's cool to see Madlib reaching a wider audience. It's also cool to see a wider audience pushing back against the music-by-committee ethos of alot of modern hip-hop and get back to an appreciation for the rawness. I saw a comments to the effect of "One rapper, one producer. That's it." At the same time, I admit to feeling slightly resentful of the fact that this type of sound is getting wider recognition at precisely the moment when I'm sort of exiting from that world. I spent years out in the desert beating the drum of hip-hop that put musicality and character ahead of polish and production value, but could not get a single one of my rapper friends to take a risk on putting out any of the projects we made together.

I become a bigger and bigger fan of Aesop Rock the older I get. He’s an artist I think has always gotten better. I was a very casual fan of his back in highschool but when I sit down and actually dissect his lyrics from anything he’s been on since Skelethon I feel convinced he’s without a doubt the best lyricist maybe ever. It used to be a bunch of abstract garble that you could make sense of if you really tried but he’s really really refined his ability to use a large bank of vocabulary but also rein it in and deliver straight to the point hard hitting lyrics that are very relatable and real. There isn’t a lot of the macho ego bullshit that hip hop music is plagued with. He has a genuine confidence and swagger to what he’s saying without being a dime a dozen rapper douche bag. I came here to share this because when I’m feeling very isolated and introspective I tend to listen to him a lot. I’ve made sense of a bunch of his songs the last few days and it still blows my mind how well he’s evolved and just how good he is. He’s someone that when it’s all said and done I really hope he gets his due for making genuine art in this genre. Not to mention he’s been producing his solo music since Skelethon as well.

I just love the way he describes the rap scene in the song Dorks. Mainly that second verse but there’s tons of lines in this song that carry so much weight when you interpret the meaning.

I used to hang around with rappers at the root of the scene
It meant a lot to feel the fugitive community breathe
Maybe to sentimentalize is to be truly naive
I know some shit about your heroes that you wouldn't believe
I think we're all a bunch of weirdos on a quest to belong
The songs are echolocation up in impregnable fog
That's why it's odd to see a pile of imperfections and flaws
Ascend a pedestal to patronize the rest of the cogs
And a mess of obnoxious fantasy, posturing and pageantry
I ain't even mad, I'm impressed, shit it's baffling
God almighty chop an ivory tower to piano keys
Play your own dirge on the way to surfin' maggot beach
You fuckin' dorks ain't a source of the art
You can't be cooler than the corners
Where you source all your parts
The poker face, all it takes a couple sordid remarks
We let the manticore out, We make the sorcery bark
Life is so unfair, party over here, I'll be over there

Lazy Eye was one of the best song released that year, no doubt about it.

I'm very unfamiliar with anything Aesop apart from this, and yet wouldn't miss an opportunity to share his stuff
