Only skimmed the video, but I find problematic the premise of "nerdy educated jazz drummer gives his stamp of approval to plebian uneducated drummers, thus demonstrating that there is artistic merit in these artists." I saw the same video except with Deantoni Parks. It's like...dude was educated at Berklee College of Music, he IS a jazz drummer. There's no need to draw a distinction between highbrow "jazz" drumming and "regular" drumming. It does a disservice to jazz by making it seem like a purely academic, intellectual discipline, as well as the "pleb" drummers, for what should be obvious reasons. Also, how can you claim to be a jazz drummer but not be aware of Zach Hill? Is the idea that jazz drummers should only listen to jazz and be completely unaware of other forms of music? Cuz that's absurd, and not an idea that should be promoted. The beauty of great artists like D Parks and Zach Hill is they break down boundaries such as genres. There is an academic approach to jazz that emphasizes technique, but we should be rejecting that.
You could say, well, the guy is giving more exposure to good artists, but the context here is that he's giving validation to accomplished artists who never needed it to begin with. Those who can't do, make youtube videos I guess.

Yeah, wholeheartedly agree. It'd make more sense if it was an old school guy reacting to technique of musicians he doesn't listen to, or something like that. Break the boundaries!
That was great.
