Whhhhaaat dafuq??

Steven must be a huge fan of Twin Peaks. He’s always had a very dark mysterious, and now horror vibe going for him. I dig it but am also a little scared of what else there is in the album.

Spontaneous for some reason makes me thing of Daft Punk RAM. Takashi is cool. Very busy sounds. Would like some more minimal sounding beats too tho.

Can't believe it's been five years since You're dead. I'm still listening to the cd I burnt back then with tracks from that period.

Definitely not a fan of the new ones though. Too busy. Too funky for my taste. I'm not digging the sound palette neither.

Well...

His evolution is becoming too busy and jazzy for me as well... sigh.

Thoughts:

Flying Lotus although being a solo artist, I don't feel like his music is really solo anymore. I feel like there's too many cooks in the kitchen now, and it doesn't pay off for the better.

There were signs of his collaborations becoming more collab heavy since Cosmogramma, with Miguel Atwood-Ferguson and Thundercat coming into play.

These few tracks so far just sound like overproduced Thundercat tracks and I think there's too much of it. When will Steve go into the studio and produce a strictly solo electronic album? It doesn't have to be all instrumental, because he could use voice samples and have a few features, but all of this live collab stuff is making his sound overly busy, and I don't really consider him as a "solo" artist anymore.

One group that this definitely works for for the better is Gorillaz, where one guy collabs with multiple people, but his albums are generally pretty incredible.

Thought it was alright. First half of the album is pretty strong, but then it falls off the second half for me. This is the first time where thundercat's bass and vocals at parts really start to get monotonous tiresome for me.

I think it's pretty good. Agree with yall that it's probably a bit too long and seems to just blur together towards towards the end. Having said that, theres nothing actually bad on there and I think I'll get many good listens out of this as I learn all the lil intricacies.

Gotta disagree with the folk saying hes too busy nowadays. I think the direction of this and You're Dead! is much more interesting than if Flylo kept in the vein of the first 3 LPs

Heroes specifically is the busiest. I get that part of jazz is improvisation, but Thundercat noodling up and down the neck no longer fascinates me like it used to. I think most of these songs don't have that busy quality. But there are songs like it in every album since Cosmogramma.

The song after Spontaneous is a song that does have a lot going on, but it doesn't have that busy sound quality there because all of the instruments have their own melodies.

There doesn't seem to be much progression from You're Dead. In fact, this album sounds like a collection of all the worst, forgettable parts from YD. I'd like to say that it will grow on me as I absorb the intricacies, but I also thought that about YD and then I just gradually lost interest and stopped listening. Idk...I guess the lingering question for me is "where are the songs?" Like where are the memorable hooks and melodies (other than "he's got titties in his face!")? I get that FlyLo is diving into the world of jazz, but, imo, if you're gonna be a jazz artist in 2018 you really have to be reinventing what jazz is, otherwise it just comes off as some throwback, pastiche to a time that never was. This applies to a lot of the jazzy stuff I hear coming out, especially stuff that comes from LA.
