God bless you Miss L'via for introducing me to this band, what a beautiful album from these guys, so much brilliance in this and so excited to see what they will do on their next LP. Im extremely addicted to "standby" and "banna ba modimo", two of the greatest songs i have ever heard in my life. The music is so refreshing and i love the singer for the band, perfect fit.

Holy shit I've been checking recently but didn't see that!

These guys are really good everyone should give them a chance

Last time we checked in with South African quartet BLK JKS was via the horn/vocal/guitar-heavy “Molalatladi” shortly before the release of After Robots. This new five-song ZOL! EP arrives around the same time of the World Cup’s arrival in the band’s Johannesburg hometown. Important, among other reasons, because we’re told the celebratory, upbeat, sunny “ZOL!” is a song about soccer. It doesn’t include any roaring guitar solos or psychedelic rock; instead, you get percussionist Tshepang Ramoba’s infectious vocals leading an “I can roll and shoot at the same time” call-and-response. It’s clearly a shift born out of genuine excitement.

ZOL! is out6/8 via Secretly Canadian. On 6/10 the band’s playing the FIFA World Cup Kickoff Celebration at Orlando Stadium in Soweto, South Africa, where they’ll be sharing the stage with Alicia Keys, Amadou & Mariam, Black Eyed Peas, John Legend, Shakira, Tinariwen, etc. So not a small show. More info at fifa.com. (Note, ZOL! is not all about soccer: Closer “Mzabalazo (Demo)” is an updated 1980s anti-apartheid protest chant. And things switch up stylistically — expect a dose of progressive rock, too.)

Blk Jks
Zol!
Secretly Canadian
Release Date: June 8, 2010

Tracklist

1. Iietys
2. Bogobe
3. Zol!
4. Paradise
5. Mzabalazo (Demo)

First Impressions

- After the release of their debut album After Robots, Johannesburg-based BLK JKS are ready to strike again with the release of their upcoming EP, Zol! on June 8, 2010 on Secretly Canadian.
- The album starts off with “Iietys,” a solid progressive rock number that will remind you of The Mars Volta.
- In “Bogobe,” the band becomes more experimental, giving an eerie touch before slowly evolving to space-rock throughout the rest of the track.
- The title-track “Zol!” showcases the band pimping themselves for the World Cup anthem, loaded with Kwaito, Afro-pop beat and choir chants.

Key Tracks

“Bogobe,” “Zol!” and “Paradise”

Predictions

Now that the world is shifting its direction towards South Africa and the FIFA World Cup, it seems like just the right time for the band to release this EP to complement the most celebrated sports event in the world.

Definitely. Probably some of these songs are going to make it to the next record.

If would be nice if more bands released eps in between albums.

I forgot to mention that you can download the song ZOL! for free, it isn't very representative of the album or the band though, just a cheery Kwaito/pop song about football.
