I think the saddest rock n roll song of all time would have to be a tie between two songs by the same band and that band is THE BAND the two songs are: THE NIGHT THEY DROVE OL DIXIE DOWN and IT MAKES NO DIFFERENCE. those may just be the saddest songs ever but if u can think of some more sad songs post em here.

"after the gold rush" by neil young is a pretty sad song. also pretty much everything on "tonight's the night" is sad as sad can be too. that is just a sad sloppy drunk album. but it's equally great.

Allman Brothers Band--Melissa
Eric Clapton--Give Me Strength

Rush--Tears (as someone mentioned) is amazing. Good call.

There's a lot that I can say here. Sad songs make me feel good, so I listen to them a lot. These are a few that stick out in my mind right now for some reason.

i love you soooooo much. 'It Makes No Difference' is probably the best song ever. Danko's vocal performance on the live version from The Last Waltz rips out your heartstrings. also, if you like The Band, listen to 'Danko/Manuel' by The Drive By Truckers. almost as sad as IMND. and 'Different Strings' has got me teary eyed more than once. 'Eons' by 311 is a super sad song that i don't think will get mentioned unless i do it.

Alot of people say Hurt from Johnny Cash, but if your talking the American years I have to say I See A Darkness with Will Oldham. The way Oldhams voice sounds mixed with Cashs' on the chorus gets me everytime. Actually there is alot of Will Oldham (Bonnie 'Prince' Billy) songs that get me misty eyed. The first time I heard New Partner I thought it had to be the saddest sounding song I ever heard. I'd like to throw My Morning Jackets "Dondante" on the list too.

Prince - When You Were Mine & I Could Never Take The Place of Your Man

The Velvet Underground - Oh Sweet Nuthin'
Bob Dylan - Just Like A Woman (From the Bootleg Royal Albert Hall CD)
Rufus Wainwright - Vibrate
Psychedelic Furs - The Ghost In You
Radiohead - How To Disappear Completely

Just a few that I like.
