I had to change my pants after listening to the new The Ocean album. It's that good, seriously. First time an album has totally floored me on first listen in a while. Double disc concept album, features 26 musicians including appearances from Caleb Scofield and Nate Newton. Based on the development of the earth and the different stages it went through - first disc is based on the period when the earth was about 230 degrees C and there were volcanoes erupting and all that stuff so it's basically five stupidly heavy, complex metal/hardcore songs. Second disc is much more epic, a lot more progged-out and ambitious and textured, and based on when it was starting to cool down and blah, read their site for a more accurate description. But basically yeah features the Berlin philharmonic, it's stupidly ambitious, concept is a bit pretentious but it's so enjoyable to listen to that i don't care. If you like mastodon/meshuggah/isis/neurosis/converge/cult of luna/prog metal in general you'll lap it up. Rant over, get.

I think it's kinda ambitious, maybe arrogant, to try and capture all that in some meagre rock music, but still, sounds interesting. I'll check it out.

Oh yeah, it's arrogant and pretentious for sure but musically it's right down my alley, i love it. Be sure to turn the speakers up loud when you listen.

Older stuff sounds either kind of meshuggah/mastodon-eque tech metal(core) or isis/neurosis-ish. Roughly, anyway. New album is by far their most interesting - disc 1 sounds like mastodon/meshuggah/converge, intense and fairly complex metal songs. Disc 2 is longer and more expansive and i guess sounds like a sort of proggy, more orchestral version of neurosis, but that's a vague description, there's a lot of variety.

I may check it out, though I prefer bands without the harsh vocals :/ but as obviously indicated in my sig there are exceptions and I do enjoy Isis and Mastodon...never got into Neurosis really. Meshuggah I have to be in the mood for, and I rarely can sit through a whole album of it

I listened to Fluxion and Aeolian a while ago and whilst it was very listenable, I wasn't feeling it as a 'great' album. I may check out this new album.

If you're in Europe, go see them live. Saw them last night (with Intronaut, who kicked a serious amount of ass) and wow. One of the best shows of the year so far, and I've seen Converge, Pelican, Cult of Luna, etcetc.
