Yeah really disappointed with the RS review. Allmusic gave
It 3 stars (less than they gave octa...) and they mentioned almost nothing about the album. I usually go to Allmusic to find new music but that review is just bull shit. They lost credit in my book. I swear some of these critics didn't even listen to the album
Gotta say, that allmusic review had me confused as hell. The criticism levelled at the record seems really vague, and I just had to roll my eyes at the view of the reviewer that the only truly good moments of the record are those which sound like ATDI. Accusing the record of being 'overthought' also shows that the reviewer is trying to read too much into things, as Omar has said himself that much of the music for this album was laid down in just 1-2 takes (and the drum parts were essentially improvised on the spot). In addition, there is almost no mention of the increased prevalence of synths, the general lack of lead guitar (pretty notable stuff you would think), and not a single detailed description of any of the tracks' relative merits or otherwise. This is all the sort of stuff that you would normally expect from allmusic, and the fact that it is all missing from this review makes me think that Noct will be one of the albums subject to those re-evaluations that allmusic tends to do every few years.
Even if they do not see fit to increase the rating in later years, giving it a full star lower than Octa is just...wrong.
Edit: And now they have completely butchered the review, removing many of the more negative sentiments expressed, but rendering it even less informative than it was before. Really poor job, and disappointing coming from them.
