Mastodon writes some of the grooviest riffs available.

Damn right. The drummer, who can't play guitar to save himself, writes them all.

I thought the music was impressive for a metal band but I really didn't like the singer. So I'm neutral on them.

I like them a lot, both of their albums are really good but they're both so different.  They have some of the best drumming I've ever heard.

Mastodon are nicely heavy - and the whole proccupation with sailing on ships, hunting whales can't be anything but positive.

I will never understand why some people think they sound like DEP though.

agreed 100%. as far as metal goes, there is a lot of space between Mastodon and D.E.P.
people see Relapse Records on anything and immediatley say that it sounds like D.E.P. use your ears, people!!!

Leviathan is an awesome CD. A metal album derived from Moby Dick. What more can I say............oh yea saw them with Slayer and DEP in San Antonio right after Thanksgiving. It seemed like the MTV crowd really liked DEP. The O.G.S.A. metalheads dug Mastodon.

I only have only heard three or four songs by them (two of which are their singles), and I really like them. I definitely agree that their drummer is pretty awesome. His style is a little more jazzy than most metal drummers, and he kind of dances around on the snare/bass/whatever cymbal is appropriate, and then he can pull off some crazy stuff during the fills.

I am probably going to pick up their cd Leviathan. I've been meaning to, since nothing I've heard by the band is bad, but I have yet to do it.

Mastadon is pretty frikin good.  They are alot different than DEP or ISIS, they strike me as more traditional metal in the Maiden/early Metallica sense.  They rock pretty frikin hard.
