here's my "guff"

gish - bleh
siamese dream - kinda reminds me of bowie's ziggy stardust. not music-wise. more as in this-was-their-breakthrough-album-which-they-easily-surpassed-later-on-but-no-one-gave-a-damn wise.
mellon collie - great, has the most variety... but the last song on disc 1 showed why iha shouldnt have made a solo album...
adore - definitely more of an acquired taste. still cant seem to listen to the thing the whole way through. good though. "annie dog" is one of my favorite songs by them period.
machina - probably my favorite. hated it with my first listen. soon realized its the catchiest one and has the best feel to it.
machina 2 - im not sure whether i like it or not... some of their heaviest stuff that i first thought should have been part of machina, but now i rather like things the way they are.

i beg to differ. ATDI owns this title.

Im pretty sure theory owns and runs this site.

No, believe me, there's always going to be some kid who says that. I love ATDI from In-Casino-Out and on. But before that, they still seemed like they were developing their sound and this period was for the greater part of the 90s, so i'd have a tough time calling them the best of the 90s.

I admire the Smashing Pumpkins but don't think they're the best of the 90s. I think could argue for Pavement, RAdiohead, and (in a show of favoritism) Pearl Jam, just as easily...

well, i agree they are not the best band... there is no "best band" cause everyone has his/her own greatest band.

but in music history importance, i think they are one of the three most important bands... i mean, if we talk about it like "early 90's/middle 90's/late 90's"...

like, nirvana with Nevermind in 93 (is it 93?), Pumpkins with Melloncollie in 95, and ok computer 97 (or 98? ash...)

well..leaving that beside.... they are enormous... you listen to Pearl Jam or many other bands which sound kinda the same in their 5, 10, 15 years of history... one record from another is totally different...

gish from adore, adore to siamese dream, siamese dream to machina etcetcetc..... still you can hear any song from SP and u know its the smashing pumpkins... at least when billy corgan sings....

melloncollie! for christ sakes! you can listen to Tales of the Scorched Earth which you can barely undestand with such dist. noises...and suddenly you find Lily My One And Only, which is totally contrary.... its like, what da f..........?!?

My fav. record is Adore... it's an amazing work of production and composition..... i know a lot of people doesnt like the record...at all... but many many people loved Pumpkins loud-rock style.... and suddenly the change from that to something, more acoustic, kinda electro...kinda weird.... i loved it... if there's something i want to emulate un my life is Adore.....

True musicians,I love them,Billy Corgan is a genius.
I mean,he has such a talent for writing songs and beautiful inspired lyrics that he must be hated by a lot of jealous people.
The devotion and love comes from us,those who are thankful to him and the rest of The smashing pumpkins.

i really dislike them. mainly b/c billy corgan's voice annoys me so greatly that i can't stand to listen to their music.

They are my favorite band, tied with Pearl Jam. I love all their records, and their b-sides are just as great. They created some really awesome music that for me, will always be timeless.

i dont feel strongly about them either way. i guess i can see how people would consider them one of the best bands of the 90s.

Adore is a beautiful album, i hated it when i first got it though cuz i was expecting another MCIS...how wrong!? it is definitely an acquired taste, no argue there...but when you reach this appreciation for such album, it'll last a lifetime. i can honestly say i love each and every song they ever wrote/played...even the bugg supertar theme (pumpkinheads know hwta im talking about)...i also think Billy's a genius and many people could only wish they had his talent...too bad he's been kind of a pussy lately but im still looking forward to his solo stuff like a loyal little bitch. i could talk about the pumpkins for hours

i like the smashin pumpkins.. they were a great band. but i think im in agreement with most people that they weren't the best band of the 90's although they kicked some serious face in. somewhat similar to Jessie and The Rippers.
