On tonight at 10 o clock pacific time (im not sure if they broadcast it differently on the east coast) on KCSM (college of san mateo jazz station) they have a good four hours or so of all free jazz, avant garde, improv, and all the other terms for it.  the shows called ALL OUT with greg bridges and its a good time.  and you can listen over the web.  Or if your in the bay area its 91.1 FM.  little plug for a damn good station.

Also frank zappas jazz from hell is well worth mentioning.

Awesome, I'm listening now. Thanks for the heads up.

I think it's mianly associated with fusion because it was one of the first jazz albums of its kind to incorporate as many rock elements as it did...in the way that it did, and also because many Miles Davis alumni took those concepts even further to create their own "true" jazz fusion albums.

Bitches Brew ain't free jazz.. It's fucking awesome, but it sure as hell ain't free jazz... John Coltrane's Meditations isn't even really free jazz is it? .. and that's way too "free" for me

You must be thinking of stuff like Ascension by John Coltrane. And if you are, you should know that Ornette Coleman has a very similar endeavor in his simply and appropriately titled Free Jazz. Perhaps you already do. But I love the stuff

I'm in love with this, as well as with Mahavishnu Orchestra albums... When it comes to jazz, I'm for fusion.

the only thing i can think of when someone mentions free jazz is the part of bill baileys live set where he goes "thats crazy daddy, take it to the bridge, take it past the bridge, take it to the post office"

jazz just isn't as cool when it's randomly played like someone with forceful diarrhea.

he's a very special exception because even though it's randomly played, it doesn't sound like absolute horseshit to me.
