'Mars' mixes it up Rating: C

I still have not forgiven Mars Volta founding members Cedric Bixler-Zavala and Omar Rodriguez-Lopez.

The two left their former band, At the Drive In during its critical and commercial high point, only to push on into the world of prog-rock with their newest adventure, The Mars Volta.

Rumors of heavy drug use surrounded the two artists as they embraced the meandering aspects of prog, content to churn out 15 minute songs full of guitar solos and unusual time signatures.

"Octahedron", the band's sixth record in seven years, is its best since the debut and it is all because the band has employed some focus this time out.

Only one song passes the eight minute mark and most of the tracks employ basic rock structures, however still fit with electronics and fuzzy guitar solos. The band has just reigned in the excess this time out and to nearly enjoyable results.

While listening to the record's eight tracks, these songs are just aching to be let loose.

Rarely do the men bust out and let loose some At the Drive In-esque chaos.

It cannot be expected for Bixler and Rodriguez to abandon their recent progressive roots, but the dudes can write a spazz-out rock song with the best. It would be nice to hear a bit of that once in a while.
