Decided to make a thread so people could check out this genre

 

Has anyone listened to Combo Chimbita?  Brooklyn-based latin band with touches of Cumbia, afro-beat, goth, psychadelia and punk.   I think might hit the right notes for Volta fans.

Most recent album: https://www.youtube....h?v=L1Cn-J54fq4 but still doesn't capture all of the prog and experimental elements that the band has during a live show.

 

Lead singer has a metal background with classical opera training too.   I saw them in Dallas this past week and really recommend catching a show. Touring in Europe in the next few weeks.

Pretty good, but I wouldn't really compare them to the Volta. The music is far more generic and in line with traditional salsa/dub templates. The musicians are competent and professional, but they lack the sense of abandon that one associates with Volta (excepting here the lead singer, who definitely brought alot of energy).

Well, of course they aren't close to the Volta.  Few bands are.  They have elements, themes and sounds that may overlap with certain aspects of the Volta.  It's like if you took the salsa part of L'via L'viaquez, turned it into Cumbia and then built off of that.
