Apostrophe/Overnight Sensation is killer as well. Try to get the two albums lumped together since they sell them seperately also.
Otherwise, you can't go wrong with the first three albums. Sheik Yerbouti rules too.
For later Zappa stuff "You are what you Is" is very entertaining.

Apostrophe is essential, as is Weasels Ripped My Flesh, Bongo Fury and Joe's Garage.

Also, read his autobiography, 'The Real Frank Zappa Book'. Probably the best book about music I've ever read.

I'd recommend this book over the one you mentioned (which is a good book from what I saw without a doubt), it has a lot of information especially for those interested in creating music as well as a lot of fun anecdotes, interviews and gossip from the various tours:

As for albums, yeah, 'Hot Rats' is the perfect album to get into FZ -- first one I heard as well. '200 Motels' is a great album. Also 'The Grand Wazoo' which is sometimes referred to as the successor to 'Hot Rats'; you would enjoy that one for sure.

The YCDTOSA live albums are also pretty good. I think Vol. 2 was a nice one but not too sure, at least it had some sort of Scandinavian concert on it. And if possible see if you can find some of his films, 'Uncle Meat' is absolutely brilliant.

I've read that one, as well. It's very good, but I preferred the other, as the words are coming from Frank's mouth.
