Here's the pitchfork report on their break-up
Karate Call It a Day
Susan Hopkins reports:
It's a sad day for jazzy indie-jam-rock: Karate have broken up. Lead singer and guitarist Geoff Farina, who's been haunting the boys and making the girls tingly with his clear, brooding moan for 12 years, posted to his official website that due to many years of rocking out as loudly as possible, his hearing has begun to suffer. "After seeing a hearing specialist and attempting to continue working with Karate," Farina posted, "it quickly became clear that I can no longer play at the high stage volume that Karate requires." The tour of Europe that has just wrapped up, sadly, is their last.
Southern Records mistress Danielle Soto, who signed Karate as one of the label's first artists, echoes the bummed sentiments of the rest of us, but assures us not to worry: "They're musicians for life, they'll never stop." Indeed, Geoff has a smattering of solo and side projects already in existence, and bassist Jeff Goddard and drummer Gavin McCarthy also are expected to continue with their own separate endeavors.
Meanwhile, the trio's album Pockets, released not even a year ago, is still around, so thank them for 12 years of music and buy it already.
