oooook... heres the deal. Im probably going to get alot of shit for this, but the fact remains... today is the 10th anniversary of Frank Zappa's death, and i still dont get it. What's the big deal. Im hoping that "Zappa" can answer my question here on these boards.

First of all- everyone says Zappas the man. But most of the time this is just a matter of conformity. How many people here can HONESTLY name three zappa songs? (dont start listing zappa songs, thats not the point of this thread). Obviously the man must be some sort of genius seeing as hes had an incredibly succesful career without a single big hit. But i personally just dont hear it. What is so AMAZING about Frank Zappa. I like his kid's names. thats dope.

That doesn't make much sense.

"today is the 10th anniversary of Frank Zappa's death, and i still dont get it. What's the big deal?"

Do you not understand that he died? Or why he died? Or why it's the 10th anniversary?

I don't understand the point of this thread. But I'm guessing that you don't understand why Zappa gets so much attention from peole who couldnt name 3 songs by him and say he's the man just to be cool. I myself have never experienced this. Anyone I know who has any opinion on Zappa has heard at least 3 full albums. People who can't name 3 songs have never heard anything by him, but hav usually heard of him and heard that he is very innovtive and influential.

im asking... what is it about his music that makes him innovative and influential? what has he influenced.. aside from his orchestral work- which wasnt entirely infuential, albeit innovative.. what about his music was so cutting edge?

He mixed several different styles together and was continuously reinventing himself to escape categorisation and improve himself as a musician. He was a stunning guitarist and incorporated his unique sense of humour into every musical style he worked with. He has influenced more people with his ideals than with his music. He was original and no-one had heard anything like what he released in the 60s and 70s. I don't know what else to say, he was just talented, unique, inventive and in the right place at the right time.

You couldnt of said that better, Im a fan of him, I just like how he was different and he was doing something on his own by himself, he was very talented.

Sad day it is today, he didnt have to die because he was diagnosed wrong by poor doctors, had he been diagnosed correctly there is a very good chance he would have survived the cancer. Oh well, everyone should go out and listen to some of his stuff, even if you dont like it, you should be able to listen to at least three albums (of the over 100 realeased) if you want to make an opnion on his music

That was nice.. to remember dennis wilson as well..anybody heard his solo album !!!!! :70:

anyways... Back to Zappa..

''The Big Deal'' is.... if he was still alive on Earth-
He would of made other 100 odd albums
and out of each one (album)
would sprout another bunch of people that wanted to start a band!

with me its his early albums that got me thinking!

but i have friends that got in to his later stuff and friends that got in to his ''orchestral work'' as well and helped them on the road of music making!

But to say you don't get it............
is fair enough :)
Zappa grows on you its hard to get*
all his work.. staight away but thats whats so ''AMAZING'' about him

The man was a musicial genius, simple as that. He could do anything, fushion, classical, weird electronic jazz.

I'll recommend Freak Out and We're Only In It For The Money, I reckon most fans would agree with those but I'll let someone else recommend a third.

Buy Threesome Vol 1, It has Freak Out!, We're Only In it For The Money, and Absolutly Free. It cost me 35 bucks, but it was damn worth it.

I also recomend Hot Rats for some good fusion stuff.
