More and more this artist has been creeping into my top most played music. She is kinda like Madlib, working in many different genres and creating personas for each one. In fact, she's pretty much collabed with anyone whose anyone in the underground hip hop world – she did an album with Madlib, she's worked with Mos Def, Flying Lotus, and these collabs are only going to increase. She doesn't really belong to that early-2000s independent set, though, which is the cool part. She works with up-and-coming talent, like Eric Lau, who is a new guy doing cool stuff in the thread of Dilla neo-soul.
In a writeup for Sound Colour Vibration, Mos Def was quoted as saying, "She's like religion." It's true, her stuff aint no joke. She's got the whole package. She works with samples, live instrumentation, the maschine, sings...whatever. She's just oozing creativity, and her recent offerings give the impression she's peaking creatively. Denderah, the jazz album she dropped this year, definitely has echoes of that deep, ancient, spiritual feeling that individuals like Coltrane tapped into (Alice Coltrane is her godmother). She even dropped a rock album, (literally yesterday) but it's more like her interpretation of rock...it's got a strong dose of funk and other genres. But the craziest part is, she does all these albums herself, without outside musicians, dubbing in all the parts in her home studio. It's some of the most slickest music I've heard coming from the home studio environment.
Simply put, she's a badass. So I figured I would start a thread to spread the word/discussion/links, etc.
Here is her new rock album: http://smashedbanana...smashed-bananas
And "Optimus Prime" from the Denderah album, a track that really blew me away: http://someothaship....k/optimus-prime
Also this track she did with Madlib -
