St. Vincent is the band of singer-guitarist-composer, Annie Clark. Hailed by the Boston Globe as an, 'adorably spunky guitar prodigy,' 23 year-old Annie has been building a buzz opening for such acclaimed and diverse acts as Television, Tracy + the Plastics, Tuck & Patti, and Xiu Xiu. An inventive and versatile guitarist, Annie has played with avant-garde composer, Glenn Branca, and is a member of symphonic pop spectacle, The Polyphonic Spree.
Some of the above songs are already streaming at her Myspace site. I highly recommend the song "Paris Is Burning"
In other saintly news, Clark is putting finishing touches on her upcoming debut, which features guest work by other members of the Polyphonic Spree as well as David Bowie's band. There is no word on which label will release the album or an exact track list, but Clark told Urban Pollution that the record would definitely include, but not be limited to the following songs, listed in no particular order:
Paris Is Burning
Your Lips Are Red
Jesus Saves, I Spend
All My Stars Aligned
What Me Worry
The Funeral Song
RIYL: Jeff Buckley, Bjork, PJ Harvey, Nina Simone etc....
NOTE: It's probably inconsequential to most, but as a guitarist, I think it's fucking awesome that her uncle is none other than famed virtuoso fingerstyle jazz guitarist Tuck Andress of the married jazz/pop duo Tuck & Patti. According to Annie, "They are the kind of people when I was 14 sat me down and put candles on and put on Coltrane's Love Supreme and The Blues and The Abstract Truth and all of these records that, when you're 14 and haven't been exposed to this, it would absolutely blow your mind. So they were pivotal in the exposure to the realm of jazz but other things as well." It's neat thinking that some of Andress' virtuosity might have rubbed off on his niece as well. You can view some youtube videos of the man in action here, here and here.
