Karnivool

A lot of you probably haven't heard of this band considering they're australian, but I highly recommend them. I've just been listening to their EP 'Persona' and their Album 'Themata' lately, and I must say its some of the best stuff I've heard in a while. For me, 'C.O.T.E' and 'L1FEL1KE' (man that song would kick arse in the mosh pit) are highlights off the album, and 'Headcase' off the Persona EP is pretty sweet too.

It's heavy enough for metal fiends but complex enough for people more interested in the prog scene.

Ian Kenny from Karnivool also shows how good the singers from the aussie metal scene really are (see 'cog' and 'the butterfly effect' for other bands with great singers).

Listen to the title track Themata Live at the Sydney 2006 Come Together Festival

I think they might be touring the US and Uk at some stage soon as well, not too sure though. A bit dissapointing for me cos I think they would be a great act at next year's Big Day Out, but great for anyone over there interested in some really good metal.

I think I did a search here a few months ago when I 1st got into them. Great melodic, progressive Hard Rock in a way. They have a similar style/appeal to bands like Fair to Midland, Opus Dai, and The Apex Theory.

They are infact touring the US briefly in late Oct/November

I didn't realize they had an EP! [goes to hunt], they do have an upcoming full-length that from the last I read on their forum, it may drop down under as early as sometime in November.

Yeah I only have the first 4 tracks of the ep but 'headcase' really stands out for me, the vocal melody is just amazing.

Im just kicking myself cos when I first started hearing about them a while back I had the opportunity to see them live, but I didnt look into them and just passed hem off as another average thrash band or something so I didnt go. How wrong I was.

New album in November? Woo! Just in time for my birthday. I've heard about it off a few people, I have a feeling its going to be even better than the first.

I hope they open it with Change (Part 2), cos thats the closing track on Themata and its really awesome, and then it just ends and its a bit disappointing, but opening with part 2 would make the two albums work really organically together,

Bit too nu metal for my liking. They have some good meshuggah type moments but the choruses are typical nu metal cheese, soaring vocals and whatnot. Shame, because they're talented guys. Their name blows too.

I'm not even sure if I've heard a song but I know I won't like them.
Actually, I'm sure I have on Triple J but didn't know it was them.

deff my fave aus band of the last 3-4 years. their rhythm sections are fkn awesome. cant wait for their new album to come out. ive seen them maybe 5 times live including an acoustic set in st kilda which was instrumentally incredible/

DESERVE MORE CRED!!

not a fan of the roquefort remix with the cat empire. that was a mistake imo.

fave tracks - c.o.t.e', fear of the sky, l1fel1ke and mauseum.

solid ya'll

I'v heard those songs. They covered Only Way and played Roquefort with horns. Both were pretty awesome. I haven't listened to their album before though but it's on my to do list...

Leanne, do I know you? Are you, (did you used to be on the old) on the Chroma Key forum? If not, I used to know a girl named Leanne over there anyway from down under.

Karnivol are not trying to be Tool. Seriously guys give them a break thy are playing music they like to make. I dont think it sounds anything like Tool. You all are crazy fools to think that? Honestly why do you think that is it because they have some weird timeing with guitar driven riffs wow then it must be a tool rip off.

Thats exactly what I was thinking, even though you can hear the influence on a couple of tracks, they are definately not tool wannabees, theyre heavier and theyve got a steadier mosh pit beat, much less prog. Just cos they make use of odd time signatures does not mean they are trying to copy tool.

If you wanna discount a band simply because theyre influenced by someone you dont like too much (but who are amazing by the way), then youre just plain silly.

On another note, Karnivool have convinced me to take interest in the Come Together Festival

Come Together festival happened months ago.

I've seen Karnivool live quite a few times now, they never disapoint. To me this is just simple straight forward rock and it's really easily enjoyable.

so it's worth $80 approx to drive to Madison, Wi to see them?

main thing i worry about is the fact they are from down under, who knows when they'll be back.
